Welcome to the memorial page for

Frances Ellen (Mallinder) Garland

October 17, 1937 ~ October 17, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Frances Ellen Garland (nee Mallinder, prior Cook) left us on the evening of October 17th, 2017 at 9PM after fighting lung cancer for several months.  She was at her loved home in New Munster with her family and her most beloved cats.

Frances was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England in 1937 to Alfred and Frances Mallinder.  She and her parents lived through the tumultuous times of the Second World War in England:  her father working for the railway system, and her mother working for the British Army, while she was taken care of by her grandmother (Rose Hannah Walker-Mace) and great-aunt (Emma Law).

The family endured the many deprivations of the times of war, including bombings of their home town and a unexploded bomb being removed from the homes' chimney.

After the war her parents chose to immigrate to the United States. The came into the U.S. on October 14, 1949 by way of ocean steamer to Nova Scotia, then train to Michigan where they entered the country.  Thereafter they trekked to California to Bakersfield.  A local businessman had offered employment to the English family and they lived and worked there for some time.  Eventually they moved further East to Chicago where Frances completed High School and worked for local businesses until she married.  In 1957 she married Greg Cook and lived in the Sunnyside neighborhood of North Chicago.   She had 2 sons:  Geoffrey, then Laurence.  In 1961 the family moved to Wisconsin to the town of New Munster in Kenosha County which is where she lived until she passed.

In 1963 Frances took a position with Modine Manufacturing in Ringwood, Illinois and worked there for over 30 years in the administrative office, rising from a position as a secretary to production control assistant, and one of the earliest female non-exempt employees of the company in a time when male roles were highly dominant.  Her husband divorced her in 1968 and she carried on with supporting her family as a single mother during a time when such a moniker was not popular.   She had the love and support of her parents (Alfred and Frances Mallinder) and her grandmother (Rose Hannah Walker- Mace).

In 1981, Frances married Gene LeRoy Garland and they lived a full life together until his passing, including caring for her mother until she passed in 2001.

Frances loved animals, which was a great factor in why she lived on the former-farm which she occupied for over 50 years.  She loved the wildlife and took in stray dogs and cats over the decades and cared for them.

Frances is survived by her family including youngest son Laurence Cook (Allen Brown), his older brother Geoffrey (Mardell) grandsons Eric (Jackie Sedar), Jonathan (Ashley Nyberg), great grand-daughter Brynlee, grandson Bradley and great-grandson Cole.
