Joseph Herbert Schaefer

Joseph H. Schaefer, 73 of Lyons, WI, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI.  He was born September, 21, 1943 in Burlington, WI, the son of the late Herbert and Eleanor (Scully) Schaefer.  Joe graduated with the Class of 1962 from St. Mary’s High School in Burlington, WI.  He served in the United States Army from April 13, 1965 to March 30, 1967, with a tour of duty in Viet Nam in 1966 to 1967.  Joe was a colorful and talented man who owned and operated a well-known tavern and restaurant, Ye Olde Hotel in Lyons, WI from 1969 to present. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Burlington VFW Post #2823, Lyons American Legion Post #327.  He was a former member of the Lyons Fire Department and Lyons Drill Team.  Joe was extremely proud of his community and public service; He was the third generation to serve on the Walworth County Board of Supervisors. Joe’s grandfather served 28 years, his dad, 20 years and Joe has served for 43 years being first elected in 1974.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph “JJ” (Heather) Schaefer of Burlington, WI, four step-children; Sherry (James) Vanderwerff of Burlington, WI, Terry (Richard) Beversdorf of Watertown, WI, Donald (Carol) Guzzetta of Burlington, WI and Tony (Kelly) Guzzetta of Burlington, WI,  Eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Donald Schaefer of Lyons, WI, one sister, Monica (Quirin) Klink of Hartford, WI, one sister-in-law, Madeline Schaefer of Lyons, WI, many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Richard “Dick” and William “Bill” Schaefer. 

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1540 Mill St Lyons, WI with Fr. Jim Volkert officiating. Burial with Military honors will follow services at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Lyons, WI.  Visitation 2:00 to 8:00PM with a prayer service at 7:45 PM on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home and Crematory 730 N Wisconsin St. Elkhorn, WI.
