Charles "Chuck" Statz Obituary

Charles William Statz, 80, of Elkhorn, WI died at his home on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.  He was born May 28, 1937 in Madison, WI, the son of the late Isadore and Mary (Murphy) Statz.  He graduated from Edgewood High School in Madison, WI with the Class of 1955, where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track.  He had a long-jump record that stood for 50 years. He was also selected to try out for the Milwaukee Braves (Brewers). He then attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a minor in History.  He ran track during college.  He later earned a master’s degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. On August 1, 1959, he was united in marriage to Elaine V. Kubasta in Oshkosh, WI.  Chuck served in the U.S. Army Reserves.  He began his teaching career in 1961 in Lake Mills High School, then Prairie du Chien High School and ending up in Elkhorn Area High School teaching Social Studies from 1965 until he retired in 1994.  During that time he coached basketball, baseball, golf and was head coach for freshman football.  He was also student council advisor. Chuck was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Elkhorn, WI and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3464.  He was a faithful donor to the Red Cross blood drives and volunteered at Lakeland Health Care Center for many years. He was an avid golfer and did make a hole-in-one at Evergreen Country Club. Chuck and Elaine enjoyed many camping trips with their kids and grandchildren.  They were also avid travelers having visited all 50 states, all seven continents and 70 countries. Chuck was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his wife of 58 years, Elaine, three children: Terri (Frank Jr.) Guske of Lake Geneva, WI; Fran (Jerry) Simon of Louisburg, WI; and Tom (Vicki Schwebach) Statz of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren: John, Margaret and Thomas Guske, Kristopher (fiancé Ashley Rotter) Schreiber, his brother Jim (Abby) Statz of Madison, WI , and his sister-in-law, Joanne Statz of Oregon, WI and further survived by a host of other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Statz. Visitation will be from 2:00PM to 4:00PM on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home and Crematory, 730 N Wisconsin Street, Elkhorn, WI.  Funeral mass will be 11:00AM on Monday, April 9, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 107 W. Walworth Street, Elkhorn, WI with Fr. Jose Zapata officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hope Now 107 W.
