Frederick William “Bill” Hiort, Jr., age 87, of Wilmot, Wisconsin and Rifle, Colorado, died Friday afternoon, June 15, 2018 at his home. 

Bill was born on January 16, 1931 in New Rochelle, New York, the son of the late Frederick William and Martha Eleanor Bishop Hiort, Sr.  “Bill” graduated from Harrison High School in Harrison, New York in 1949 and Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana in 1961.  Bill was an Electrical Engineer and worked for Budelman Electronic; Motorola Inc., RCA, was Founder and President of Nicomm, Inc. and was Senior Managing Partner for Nicomm, LLC.

Bill was united in marriage to Barbara J. (Smith) Anderson on October 16, 1993 in Wilmot, Wisconsin.

Bill served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Garmisch, Germany.  While he was stationed there he became a member of the U.S. Army’s branch of the National Ski Patrol.  He became a member of the Bergwacht, Germany’s Mountain and Ski Rescue Society.  While stationed in Garmisch, he designed a new type of rescue sled, allowing an injured person to ride flat instead of having to sit up on the sled.

Bill was a member of the Wilmot United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assoc., a lifetime member of the Illinois Rifle Assoc., a lifetime member of the National Ski Patrol System, a member of Sunlight Mountain Ski Patrol (Glenwood Springs, Colorado), a member of the Garfield County (Colorado) Search and Rescue., a member of the Wilmot, WI Ski Patrol, a member of the Rifle, Colorado Sportsman Club and the Silver Lake, WI Sportsman Club.

Bill earned the National Ski Patrol System Awards; Purple Star for saving a life, Yellow Merit Star for Fundraising, the National Appointment #3639, Patrol Director of the Year, 3-I Region and the 70 year Service Recognition Award.

Bill’s hobbies and interests were flying and he had his FFA Instrument and Commercial single engine (Land) pilot license he also had his amateur Radio Operator License.  He was a camping enthusiast and rock climber.  He was an avid reader, builder, a former Paramedic and EMT in Elgin, IL and was a master joke teller.

Bill is survived by:  his wife, Barbara; his children, Starr (Arlynn) Nelson, Jeffrey (Pam) Sedler, Deborah L. (Mark) Hartman, Diana M. (Mark) Young and Frederick W. (Kim) Hiort, III; Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, Jamie (Shelly) Nelson, Desmond and Victor, Paul L. (Tonya) Sedler, John and Holly, Jeffrey (Heidi) Sedler, Matt and Jake, Philip (Jenny) Hartman, Maggie and one expected, Christopher (Maria) Hartman, Brooklyn, Jayden, Layla, Zoey and Zeke, Timothy (Mandy) Young, Avery and Hadley, Caleb (Michele) Young, Eli and Kennedy, Sarah (CJ) Peterson, Jaiden, Lilly and Ethan, Joshua Young, Ashley Richards and Austin Richards.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Janice M. (Bobbi) Hiort.

The Hiort Family especially thanks Dr. David Knight, Hemotology specialist, his efficient and caring team and all others at Froedtert South-St. Catherine’s Medical Center Campus, Pleasant Prairie, WI who helped in treatments to extend Bill’s life.  Also a special Thank You to Hospice Alliance and especially Julie, the Hospice Nurse.

A gathering of friends will be held from 10:00AM until the Memorial Service at 12:00PM on Friday, June 29, 2018 at the Wilmot United Methodist Church, 11425 Fox River Road, Wilmot, WI. with Pastor Judy Wang officiating.  Memorial remembrances may be directed to the Hiort Family at P.O. Box 310, Twin Lakes, WI 53181 for a charity to be determined at a later date.  The Haase-Lockwood & Assoc. Funeral Home and Crematory of Twin Lakes is serving the Hiort Family
