Martin John Zempel

Martin J. Zempel, 91 of Delavan, WI, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center. Marty was born June 8, 1926 to John and Olga Zempel in Hartland, WI and graduated from Hartland High school in 1944.

Marty was drafted in the Army in World War II and stationed in Luzon, Philippines with the 112thRegimental Combat Team.  He earned an Infantry Combat Badge and a Bronze Star.  He took part in the occupation of Japan when the war ended.  He was then assigned to the 8th Army Headquarters and worked with the Court Reporter Service on War Crimes Prosecutions. His service was celebrated during his Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2012. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1952. He married Lavonne (Steen) in Moose Lake, MN on July 7, 1962, and they were married more than 55 years. He worked for Red Cross Drug Company in Kenosha and Racine for 25 years, and later, with his wife, purchased and ran Park-View Pharmacy in Elkhorn until his retirement in 1994. Marty and Lavonne were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elkhorn.  He was a longtime member of Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Lavonne and a son, Dr. John (Sue) Zempel of St. Louis, a daughter Krista (Tom) Holland of Appleton, grandchildren: Christopher, Joseph, Ellie, Ted, Will, Drew and Matthew. His parents, sister (Lydia Fromm) and two brothers (Myron Zempel, Milton Bierbaum) preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be 11:00AM on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 104 S Broad St. Elkhorn, with Pastor Tom DeGroot officiating.  Visitation will be 10:00AM until service time Thursday at Church.  Interment with Military Honors will follow services at Hazel Ridge Cemetery in Elkhorn, WI.
