Obituary

Alice Jean Chesebro Smith, 91, a seven year resident of Elkhorn, WI, passed away peacefully Friday, March 21, 2025.  She was born October 5, 1933, in North Canaan, CT, the daughter of the late Leon and Helen M. (Dewey) Chesebro. She was raised and called North Canaan, CT home, no matter where she lived. Alice graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) in 1951; received a Bachelor of Science degree at William Smith College in Geneve, NY in 1955 and received a Master's Degree in Education from University of Hartford in 1959.

With a diverse and dedicated teaching career, Alice taught Math and Science to students all over the world. She taught in five states, including Windsor, CT and Falls Village, CT; Millerton, NY; Bangor, ME; Cheyenne, WY; and New Marlborough, MA. She also taught military dependents overseas in France, England, Germany, Turkey, Okinawa, and the Netherlands.

A passionate traveler, Alice started at 16 years old finding adventure. From road trips throughout the US, traveling to all 50 states, to traveling on four continents, she never quenched her thirst for learning about other cultures. Some of her escapades were traveling throughout Europe and Northern Africa at just 25 years old and driving the Alaska highway solo at 62. Some of her favorite countries were Turkey, Kenya, and England.

Alice loved all animals, especially dogs, cats, tropical and saltwater fish, and birds. She also loved gardening, reading, completing puzzles and other games, and going for a good drive. She kept her mind sharp by spending time on her computer in her later years.

Alice was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.   Alice is survived by her five children: Corinne (Jim) Vail, Christopher (Tammy) Smith, Ernestine (Christopher) Bowen, Trevor Smith, and Gwendolyn (Mark) Gajewski, ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Louise Chesebro, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Leon Frederick Chesebro.

Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery in Alice's hometown of North Canaan, CT.   Online guest book available at www.haaselockwoodfhs.com.
