Obituary

Douglas Carl Amon, age 87 of Delavan, WI, died at home on September 22, 2024.  Doug was born on September 11, 1937, son of the late Carl and Hazel (Tharinger) Amon. Doug married Karen Grever on November 19, 1960 and they raised four children, farmed and ran the milk hauling business together. From a very young age, Doug started hauling cans with his father, and then took over the milk routes himself in 1962. He sold his bulk milk hauling business in 2005 having built a fleet of nine tractors, six straight trucks, and thirty trailers.

After retirement, he planted 25 roses in memory of his late wife. Over the next 15 years, his garden grew to 450 rose bushes and became a tourist destination, hosting up to 2,000 visitors each year. His garden was also a site for weddings, photo shoots, and his annual birthday celebration/community picnic each September. He was featured in a number of newspaper and magazine articles, and had his television debut on Around the Corner with John McGivern. Some of the highlights of his garden were greeting new and repeat visitors, making new friends, showing off his favorite blooms, and giving visitors rides in his 1924 Model T. His roses earned many accolades at local, state, and national competitions. In 2021 he won the top prize at the National Rose Show.

Some of his favorite memories include leading the football team in high school, being senior class president, presenting a testimonial sermon in church, and donating a new church steeple in memory of his late daughter Kelly. He took great pride in his volunteer work which included 20 years with Senior Meals of Walworth County and 10 years with the Aurora Auxiliary Volunteers. In 2016 he was honored with the Outstanding Senior for Walworth County Fair award, "due to his longtime support of Walworth County's agriculture, his church, and his community."

Doug is preceded in death by: his parents, his wife Karen, his sister Lois, and his daughter Kelly. He is survived by three daughters: Patty Stern, Connie Amon, Kim (Tim) Graham. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Chris Stern, Sarah (Aaron) Herzfeldt, Ruben Coronel, Makayla Graham (William Huettig), Emily (Kent) Delene, and Justin Graham. He has two great grandchildren: Erin and Ben Herzfeldt.
