Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor Frances Hamel (née Winston), a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and proud United States Navy veteran.

Eleanor passed away on March 13, 2026, at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of service, strength, and unwavering love for her family.

Eleanor was born on January 4, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, but made Illinois her home for over 70 years, however she never lost her unmistakable New York accent, which added to her charm and bringing smiles to those around her. Whether she was asking for a “Millahs Lite” or sharing stories, her warmth and humor made her unforgettable.

She served her country honorably during the Korean War as a Petty Officer (Teleman) in the United States Navy from March 10, 1951, to September 22, 1953. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Richard L. Hamel. They married in 1953 and shared 30 years together until his passing in 1983.

Eleanor dedicated over 20 years of her career to Special Education at SEDOL in Gages Lake, where her compassion and commitment made a lasting impact on countless students and families.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard L. Hamel, and her eldest son, Richard L. Hamel II, who passed away in 1971, as well as her siblings; Virginia Brennan, John(Jack)Winston, Katherine Visconte, Estelle Flammia, Evelyn Winston and Lucille Derby.

She is survived by her five loving children: John (Kathleen), Michael (Dianne), Catherine Cullen (Steve), David (Flori), and Ginger; her eleven grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Eleanor cherished time spent with family and friends—playing cards, listening to music, dancing, and rolling dice, where she often walked away the victor.

She lived life with an undeniable love of adventure, including flights on planes and helicopters, riding in hot air balloons, and never passed up the thrill of a rollercoaster.

As a young child, she witnessed the Hindenburg just hours before its tragic end on May 6, 1937, a memory she carried throughout her life, and she often shared with everyone.

In 2022, at the age of 94, accompanied by her daughters, Eleanor proudly participated in Lake County Honor Flight #18. She was the only woman aboard, an experience that brought her tremendous pride as she visited the nation’s capital and the memorials honoring those who served.

Her life will be remembered as one of service, love and quiet strength. She gave selflessly and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Eleanor will be laid to rest on May 8 in a private family service with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's name to Lake County Honor Flight.
