Obituary

Gladys G. Burgess, 96 of Elkhorn, WI passed away peacefully with family at her side on Monday June 27, 2016 at Lakeland Health Care Center Elkhorn, WI.  Gladys was born in Oconomowoc, WI on March 6, 1920 to the late Elmer and Clara (Hansen) Gaul.  Together with her older brother Gordon, they lived on a dairy farm in Dousman, WI.  She graduated from Oconomowoc High School with the Class of 1937.  On June 8, 1940 she was united in marriage to James Burgess at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dousman, WI.  They settled on a dairy farm in Fort Atkinson, WI.  During that time two sons (Howard and Steven) and a daughter (Susan) were born.  In 1952 they moved to their farm in Elkhorn, WI.  Besides milking cows, raising chickens and helping in the fields, Gladys had a huge flower and vegetable garden.  She also grew raspberries, grapes and strawberries.  Gladys and her daughter were very active in 4-H.  In 1959 she became General Leader of the Elkhorn 4-H Club.  For many years she volunteered at the Elkhorn Food Pantry and the Senior Nutrition Meal site.  She supported the local blood drives and donated over five gallons of blood during her lifetime.  For many years Gladys helped prepare the weekly lunch for the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, and the monthly lunch for the Chamber of Commerce.  Gladys was a member of St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church of Elkhorn, WI.  She was always busy with church activities including the community meals, alter guild, bake sales, funeral and salad luncheons, selling spring plants and Christmas trees.  For years she provided fresh flowers for alter of the church from her garden.  Gladys enjoyed taking bus trips, attending plays at the Fireside Theater, reading, spending time with her family and attending the Walworth County Fair.  Once spring arrived she spent most of the day mowing her huge lawns and working in the garden.  She loved her evergreens and planted many over the years.  Gladys is survived by her three children; Howard (Judy) Burgess, Steven (Carol) Burgess both of Elkhorn, WI and Susan (Wayne) Smith of Friendship, WI, four grandchildren; Christon (Gretchen) Burgess of Delavan, WI, Jason (Hasha) Acerbi of Humble, TX, Jill Anderson of Elkhorn, WI and Day (John) Fandrich of Monroe, WI., two step-grandchildren; Jody (Heidi) Smith and Ryan (Lisa) Smith both of Kenosha, WI, nine great-grandchildren; Mason, Madison (due in July) Katie, Nick and Jodi Anderson, Haley, Jayden, Macie and Beckett Smith.   Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday July 1, 2016 at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church 13 South Church Street Elkhorn, WI with Rev. Joel Allen Prather Officiating.
