James "Jim" R. Nelson, Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather, Age 95, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and adoring staff at Golden Years by his side. Jim was born on October 27, 1928, son of the late John and Ruth (Poulsen) Nelson. Jim enlisted in the Army when he was seventeen. He served in WWII & the Korean War. Jim proudly served his country with dignity, courage, and dedication. After returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Karen Buchweitz, then continued his education at Dana College, in Blair Nebraska, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Jim began his professional career as a fifth-grade teacher in the Lake Geneva School District. His favorite class was teaching Science. He was known for his exciting rocketry lessons which culminated with his students building and shooting off rockets. Jim was a valued and innovative teacher dedicated to his students and colleagues.
Jim loved being an active and devoted member of Calvary Community Church and his local community. Jim enjoyed volunteer work, gardening, fishing, camping, hiking, family vacations, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he adored. Jim was devoted to his beautiful wife, Karen, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and supported all their academic, sports, music, and social activities, which brought him boundless joy.
Jim was a kind and generous man who truly touched so many lives. Jim's genuinely quiet nature of caring for others left an impression on all who knew him. Jim leaves a legacy of life lessons filled with wisdom, strength, humility, a strong faith in God, and serving others.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen; children; John (Diane) Nelson, David (Kim) Nelson, Mark Neilsen, Susan (John) Langholff, Jeremy (Miriam) Nelson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joan Coffey, and son, Thomas Nelson.
A funeral for Jim will take place at Calvary Community Church, N2620 Harris Road Lake Geneva, WI on Saturday July 20, 2024, at 10:00AM followed by Military Honors. Jim will be laid to rest at West Lawn Memorial Park in Racine, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred in Jim's name to Calvary Community Church Youth Groups.
