Celebrating the Life of John Andrew Hohlfelder
John Andrew Hohlfelder, a man of profound integrity, boundless dedication, and unwavering love for his family, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, June 19, 2026, surrounded by the family he so fiercely loved and protected. He was 76 years old.
Born on December 17, 1949, in Highland Park, Illinois, to Ronald and Rosemary Hohlfelder, John learned early on the values of hard work and community. He graduated from Elkhorn Area High School with the Class of 1968 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force.
On July 13, 1974, John married the love of his life, Patricia (Pat) Leach. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in devotion, laughter, and shared dreams. For decades, their home on Bubbling Springs Drive was the heart of their world—a place where they raised their three beloved daughters: Katherine, Karen, and Kristine. John was the ultimate family man: a devoted husband, a guiding father, and an adored "Papa." His wisdom, love, and steady direction remained clear and constant right to the very end.
To know John was to know a true craftsman and a visionary entrepreneur. He was a proud member of the IBEW 890 union and a self-employed force of nature for many years. As the owner and operator of R&J Contracting, Cloverleaf Carwashes (in Elkhorn, Delavan, and Burlington), and the McHenry Street Depot, John left an indelible mark on his local community.
He was a genuine jack-of-all-trades. For anyone who had the privilege of knowing or working with him, one truth was absolute: John never did anything mediocre. If a job was worth doing, it was worth doing to perfection. Beyond his professional achievements, John had a deeply generous spirit. He loved his neighborhood and was always looking out for others and thinking of how he could lend a hand or brighten someone's day.
John's legacy of love, thoughtfulness, and work ethic lives on through his family. He is survived by: His devoted wife, Pat; his loving daughters: Kate (Jesse) Pertzborn, Karen (Ryan) Mundt, and Kris (Blane) Redmer; His 8 cherished grandchildren: Mac, Drew, Will, Connor, Wyatt, Reese, Kaeli, and Camdyn; His brother, Jim (Jo) Hohlfelder, and sister, Judy (Steve) Jacobson; His dear Aunt Marilynn, as well as beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
John was reunited in peace with those who went before him, including his parents, Ronald and Rosemary Hohlfelder; his parents-in-law, Jack and Janette Leach; and other dear family members and friends.
The Hohlfelder family wishes to extend their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to Aurora Hospice for their exceptional care and assistance, which allowed John to remain in the comfort of his own home, exactly where he wanted to be. A special thank you goes to Jennifer, Salina, Tammy, and all the caregivers who provided comfort, dignity, and kindness to John and his family at the end of his beautiful life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in John's honor to support two organizations close to his heart: Lauderdale-LaGrange Rescue Squad or Lutherdale Bible Camp: https://www.lutherdale.org/donate
