Obituary

Joseph “Jay Bird” W. Bernhardt, 66, of Lake Geneva, WI., a beloved father, loyal friend, and lifelong bartender, whose warm presence made every room brighter, passed away peacefully on September14th, 2026, at 3:02 A.M. Jay was born in Illinois to his parents, Ralph, and Donna (Patterson) Bernhardt, on June 19th, 1960. He was a man who lived simply and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A devoted dad, he was the proud father of three daughters, Tina, Jaclyn, Holly, and his son Zachary. He cherished his role as their loving father, always ready with encouragement, a listening ear, and the kind of steady support that made his children know they were his greatest joy. Beyond his family, he knew he was a true friend to many, someone whose infectious smile, quick wit, and genuine kindness drew people in and made them feel at home.

For decades, he worked as a bartender, becoming a familiar and welcome fixture wherever he poured drinks. Patrons and coworkers alike enjoyed being around him: he had a natural gift for conversation, a generous spirit, and the ability to turn an ordinary evening into something memorable. His bar was more than a workplace it was a gathering place where friendships formed and stories were shared.

In his free time, he enjoyed watching his kids play sports, and supporting them through that time I their lives. He also found pure joy in cheering on his favorite pro sports teams. Whether it was packing the bar for a Packers game while he tended bar or rooting for the Milwaukee Brewers through every season, his enthusiasm was infectious. Those who sat with him during game will long remember his cheers, his friendly rivalry, and the way he celebrated every victory, and took every loss with the same good-natured loyalty.

Jay is survived by his children; Tina (Erik) Bergloff, Jaclyn (Kirk Williams) Sanders, Holly (George) Hansen, and Zachary (Bria) Bernhardt. He is Papa Jay to his grandkids; Michael (Logyn), Tyler, Ethan, Leah (Zach), Brayden, Blake, Justin, Brynnley, and Zoey. Papa Jay is further survived by his great grandchildren; Jaxon, and Beau.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings; Cindy and Burt.

Jay will be deeply missed by his children, his extended family, and the many friends who were lucky enough to share a laugh, a story, or a cold one with him.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests raising a glass in his memory, and maybe catching a Packers or Brewers game in his honor.

A celebration of life for Jay will be happening at a later date. We at Haase-Lockwood & Associates are honored to have take care of the Bernhardt family.
