Joseph Michael Varhula, age 87, of Fontana, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, at Vintage on the Ponds in Delavan, Wisconsin. Born on September 15, 1938, in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, Joe was the cherished son of John and Anna (Popovich) Varhula.
Joe was proud to serve his country in the United States Air Force, embodying the values of dedication and honor throughout his life. On July 7, 1985, he was united in marriage to Karen J. Anderson in Algonquin, Illinois. Their loving partnership was a source of strength and joy for both.
Joe was a remarkably talented musician with a special passion for the drums and the vibrant rhythms of Jazz. As a dedicated educator, Joe instilled a deep love and appreciation for music in the hearts of countless students. Their enthusiasm and continued devotion to music are a testament to his lasting legacy as a teacher and mentor.
In his later years, Joe pursued his affection for horses for relaxation and enjoyment. These majestic animals brought him comfort, joy, and happiness, especially during the early stages of dementia, providing solace and companionship.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; sons, Frederick (Gail) Varhula and Mitchell Varhula (Laura); six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special family members and close friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, and several treasured family members and close friends.
Joe will be remembered for his kindness, his musical talent, and the inspiration he brought to those around him. His legacy lives on in the music he loved, the students he taught, and the family and friends who were blessed to know him.
Visitation for Joe will begin at 10:00 am with the Service at 11:00 on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Delavan United Church of Christ, located at 123 E. Washington Street, Delavan, WI 53115. Following the Service, lunch will be provided. A private committal ceremony will be held at Roselawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Joe’s name to Time is Now to Help (PO Box 1, Lake Geneva, WI 53147); Tree House (W4063 County Road NN, Elkhorn, WI 53121); or Turning Point Inc. (11019 US-14 Woodstock, IL 60098).
