Obituary

Loretta "Lori" J. Mohan, 74, of Naples, FL, and Elkhorn, WI, passed away suddenly on January 21, 2025, at Naples Community Hospital North. Born on July 3, 1950, to Franklin and Lillian (Young) Jacobson in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Lori grew up surrounded by love and laughter alongside her sister, Louise Butler. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Lori leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and unwavering dedication to those she cherished most.

Lori earned her degree in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and where she met her life-time love, John R. Mohan. She began her career as an English teacher at Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois. She later dedicated herself to raising their two sons, Doug (born 1976, now in St Petersburg, FL) and Scott (born 1979, now in Fort Collins, CO) before rekindling her passion for education. In her children's grade school years, Lori was elected to the Grade School Board District 54 and served as President for several years. She substitute taught at the boys' Hoffman Estates high school and would often make a surprise appearance in their classrooms. She later earned a master's degree in Library Science from Dominican University. Her career culminated as a high school librarian, where she shared her love of learning with countless students.

After marrying on August 28, 1971, at St. Petronille Catholic Church in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Lori and John settled in Schaumburg, Illinois, where they lived for 35 years, raised their boys, and remained for many years after their children were grown. Lori enjoyed hosting their bridge club, gourmet club, and holiday parties at their home and joining John for volleyball club and golf. Around 1990 they purchased a lake house at Lauderdale Lakes in Wisconsin, the same lake Lori had cherished growing up with her grandparents and extended family. Lori and John spent most summer weekends there as their boys grew up, where she taught them to water ski and drive the boat.

Lori's vibrant spirit shone through in everything she did. She was a talented and avid water skier and had a beautiful singing voice displayed in her high school and college choirs. Her favorite song to sing was "Crazy" by Patsy Cline, which she performed at karaoke for her adoring family last Thanksgiving in John's hometown, Streator, IL. She loved travelling, visiting China in 1995 for the Beijing Conference on Women with her local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and just recently visiting Milan, Venice, and Lake Como in Italy. She also took river cruises on the Seine and the Danube and has visited France, Ireland, Spain, England, Hungary, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria and the Caribbean. Most of all, Lori was a prolific reader and a talented gardener, transforming her yards into vibrant gardens of color and beauty.

Together, Lori and John regularly held epic, multi-day holiday gatherings at the Lauderdale Lakes house. In retirement, Lori enjoyed snowbirding with John between Elkhorn and Naples, FL. Her devotion to her family was unparalleled, and her home was always filled with love, laughter, and the comforting presence of furry companions.

Lori's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John Mohan, their sons Doug and Scott, son-in-law Ricardo Rosa, grandson Jack, sister Louise Butler, and a host of extended family and friends. She is now reunited with her parents, Franklin and Lillian.
