Mary "Sue"Fitzgerald

Sue Fitzgerald, born Mary Susanne Futterer on October 10, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away at home on September 1, 2026, in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.

Sue lived a life rooted in faith and family. A graduate of Alvernia High School, she had a lifelong love of her Catholic faith and spent her life continuing to learn, grow, and deepen her relationship with God. She met the love of her life in the mountains of Ogden, Utah while traveling to care for family there. On December 9, 1950, she married John “Jack” Fitzgerald in Chicago, beginning a partnership that would shape the course of her life. Their family quickly began to grow as they moved across the country several times before settling in Twin Lakes, the town she had loved visiting since childhood. Together, she and her husband owned and warmly welcomed guests at Olde Fitzgerald’s Resort in Twin Lakes from 1976 until 1990. Together Sue and Jack started a Door County style fish boil at the resort. After the sudden passing of Jack in 1990, she decided to follow through on their plans to continue the now loved fish boils at the historic octagon house in Genoa City, Wisconsin, a family restaurant that continues to be run by her loved ones today. Sue was an accomplished businesswoman, but her true passion was for people. She enjoyed talking with everyone that came through the doors, loved providing a place for families and friends to gather, and cared deeply about her employees and customers alike.

Her life was also marked by enthusiastic devotion to her church and community. Sue was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Twin Lakes and taught religious education there well into her 80s. She also was deeply involved and gave of herself through the Bereavement Committee, Adult Faith Formation, and the Human Concerns Committee. Beyond her work and ministry, she was an avid reader and enjoyed camping in her early years. Her two sisters were her best friends and she loved the precious moments that she spent with them. She loved sharing the beauty she found in the world with everyone around her, whether it was the wrens that lived in her garden, the colors of a sunset, or the smell of the lake on a summer day.

Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Jack” Fitzgerald, who died on October 24, 1990. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ann McCardia and Joanne “Dodie” Robers.

She is survived by her loving children: Mickey (Ted) Pagoaga, Colleen Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald, Thomas (Missy) Fitzgerald, Kevin (Tina) Fitzgerald, Kitty (Dan) Popenhagen and Marianne (Chris) Weber. Further survived by 19 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren.  In the life of her family, Sue’s legacy endures in the bonds she nurtured, the traditions she upheld, and the example of faith, perseverance, and love she set.

Visitation will be held on September 8, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 701 North Lake Avenue, Twin Lakes, Wisconsin 53181. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place on September 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Cemetery in Twin Lakes.

Sue will be remembered with love for her steadfast faith, joyful and generous spirit, ability to see the beauty in everything no matter how ordinary, and the warmth she brought to her family, her church, and her community. Her life was one of service and devotion, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the team of nurses and nurse aids for their loving and excellent care in the last years of Sue’s life, especially Taryn and Karis.

Memorials in her name may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church to be used for a future gathering space.
