IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sonia Hazen
Fondrie
September 25, 1927 – October 1, 2022
Sonia Hazen Fondrie, only child of Sonia and Harvey Hazen and beloved wife of Stuart Fondrie, passed away on October 1, 2022, shortly after her 95th birthday. Sunny, as she was known, was born September 25, 1927, in Melrose Park, Ill., in the hospital where her mother, Sonia Miroff, had been head obstetrical nurse before her marriage. She was raised by her parents and grandparents at Hazen's Long Lake Lodge near Phelps, Wis. She graduated from high school in Oak Park, Ill., and attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., graduating in 1949 with a degree in Romance Languages.
Sunny was raised in the outdoor life at her grandparents' and parents' resort on Long Lake in Phelps. She enjoyed skiing, hunting, riding, swimming, and anything in the green or under the blue. While at Carleton College, she tried out for the men's ski team; however, though a better skier than many of the men, she was denied a spot on the team because of her gender.
Sunny met her future husband, Stu, at Long Lake Lodge when he was visiting his nearby college roommate. They were united in marriage in November 1953 after Stu's return from Korea. Following Stu's tour of duty in the Air Force, his graduation from UW-Madison, and a short time in southern Wisconsin, Sunny and Stu returned permanently to Phelps in 1957 to manage Hazen's Long Lake Lodge.
In addition to running the resort and raising four children, Sunny was active in the community. She served on the Northwoods Living Care Foundation, volunteered at the Phelps library, participated in the Phelps Woman's Club, volunteered as a Phelps Crisis Intervention Representative, and worked as a census taker. She was an avid bridge player, especially during the long Northwoods winters. She was called Sunny for a reason - always cheerful, helpful, and alert to the needs and wants of family and friends.
After selling the resort, Sunny and Stu retired to Florida for the winters, returning to their cabins on Long Lake to spend the summers. During her early years of retirement, Sunny was an enthusiastic coupon clipper, "refunder," and golf ball hawker, thrifty as always. She played golf, enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, fed birds and wildlife, and loved her summers at the lake. Later, after she developed dementia, she and Stu moved to an independent living community in Stu's hometown Reedsburg, Wis., until his death.
Sunny is survived by daughter Jeanne (Kate Miller) of Bellingham, Wash., son Charles (Kathy) of East Troy, Wis., daughter Patricia of New York City, daughter Suzanne (John Gleboff) of Eau Claire, Wis., and 6 grandchildren: Justin Fondrie, Simon Fondrie-Teitler, Claire Fondrie-Teitler, Luc Fondrie-Teitler, Konrad Fondrie, and John Gleboff. Her husband Stu predeceased her in 2017.
At her request, there will be no service or memorials. Remembrances may be made to a dementia research organization or to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
