IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan M.
(Haberman) Lathrum
September 12, 1941 – July 25, 2024
Susan M. Lathrum, 82 of Delavan, WI, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at her home.
Susan was an artist, an educator, a mother, wife, a leader, and always a pioneering woman.
She was born in Omaha, NE on 9-12-41 and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1968 with a degree in Art Education. As a single mother working for the State of Nebraska in the 1960's, she fought to be paid the same as her male counterparts, and won.
While her early career focused on teaching art in public schools in both Dubuque, IA and Menomonee Falls, WI, during the latter part of the 1970's, she turned her focus to her own art career. She participated in the tight-knit art community in Menomonee Falls, and the Wisconsin Designer Craftsmen, and participated in numerous juried shows throughout the U.S.
She belonged to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Menomonee Falls branch - and served as chapter president at one point. She became the first woman elected to the School Board in Menomonee Falls and served on the board for 12 years (1976-1988). The campaign was run by women who also belonged to the AAUW and later went on to launch their own political careers.
She demonstrated great fortitude when working in the financial services industry from 1980-2012. There were few women working in professional roles at that time, and she found it difficult to be taken seriously by the male decision-makers she encountered. However, by focusing on being knowledgeable in her area, and putting her clients' interests first, she developed a loyal client base and built a successful career.
She became a certified financial planner in 1984 and eventually served as president of the International Association of Financial Planners (IAFP) for two years. Having developed a focus on planning for late-in-life needs, she was often quoted in publications; and the continuing education classes she taught were popular, filling up every time she taught.
As the years went on, she returned to her art, continually experimenting with new media and methods, and also found time to enjoy reading, gardening, and genealogy.
Susan is survived by her three sons: Scott (Chris) Morgan, Quentin Morgan and Matthew (Sarah) Lathrum, two grandchildren, Jade and Kai Morgan, and two brothers, John (Katherine) Haberman and Joseph Haberman. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Martha Clausen.
