Bernice Mary Richter

Bernice M. Richter, age 90, of Twin Lakes, WI, passed away Sunday morning May 21, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

The former Bernice Mary Elverman was born on May 26, 1926 on the Elverman farm north of Wilmot, WI, the daughter of the late John and Rose Nattefort Elverman.  Bernice has been a lifelong resident of Kenosha County. 

Bernice attended St. Alphonsus School in New Munster, WI.  She graduated from Wilmot High School with the class of 1943.  She attended the Racine-Kenosha County Teachers college in 1945.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a Bachelor’s degree.  She also did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in guidance.

On June 18, 1946, Bernice married her high school sweetheart, Marvin J. Richter in Wilmot, WI.

Bernice taught school for 46 years.  Her first job was at Mound Center, Cottage School in Twin Lakes, WI, then she went to Elderwood and Brookwood School in Genoa City and moved to Lakewood School in Twin Lakes from 1961 until 1990.

Bernice belonged to St. John’s Catholic Church in Twin Lakes and attended the La Salette Shrine.  She also belonged to the Wisconsin Retired Teacher’s Assoc., the Twin Lakes Seniors, Catholic Foresters, the Red Hat Society, the Southern Lakes Educators and active in the Business and Professional Women’s group.

Bernice loved to travel and visited all 50 states.  She traveled Canada, Mexico and made 2 trips to Europe where she visited 5 countries and the British Isles.  She enjoyed reading and going to casinos.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She attended all the sporting activities over the years.  When she was 72 years old, she traveled to Milwaukee to babysit her great grandson, Evan, once a week.

Bernice is survived by: her son and daughter in law, Paul and Deborah Richter of Twin Lakes, WI; sister in law, Pat Richter of Texas; grandchildren, Joy (Ken) Seiberlich, Bran (Jennifer) Richter and Chad (Jessica Pacholczak) Richter; great grandchildren, Evan, Alec and Ella.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin J. Richter on October 14, 2015; sister in law and brother in law, Joyce and Dennis Beula; brother in law and sister in law, Harvey “Bud” and Barbara Richter; brother in law Max Richter and nephew, William Richter.

The Richter Family would like to thank their friends, Maria and Ala for the excellent cre provided for Bernice.  Also a thank you to Aurora at Home Hospice for their care and support.

The Richter Family will receive friends from 9:00AM Friday May 26, 2017 until the Funeral Services at 12:00PM at the Haase-Lockwood & Assoc. Funeral Home and Crematory, 620 Legion Dr. Twin Lakes, WI.  Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.  Memorial remembrances may be made to the Twin Lakes Rescue Squad, 236 E. Main St. Twin Lakes, WI. 53181.
