I was lying here tonight thinking of the great men and women that had a huge impact on me throughout my life. My first thought went right to my coach. He will always be my coach. He was football to me, and I used to take football very seriously. I went to college and had to listen to as new "coach". I wasn't impressed with what I heard. I realized that I loved football partly because I loved Coach Yanke. Besides my Dad. Coach Yanke was my example of what a man was. He was tough, funny, eccentric to the point of confusion for my young brain, but I knew he loved me. That's a wierd word to use with someone outside your family, but I never doubted his concern and love for me. I don't want to divulge all the wonderfully insane, fun yet loving wisdom he was kind enough to share with me. But I have to share this. I was having a bad day and mad as hell. He looked at me with that smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eye and said " Jeshusss Christ Gay! (Gay is my last name) if your so worked up about things take it to the field! You can do stuff out there that you would get arrested for in real life! He was right in my face and pinching his glasses between his thumb and index finger, as was his way. I realize now that it wasn't ever about football necessarily, but about him taking the time and trying to coach me into a better way. He actually cared about me with no reason to do so. I can only imagine the love he had for his own family. He was and is a great man and I love and miss him dearly.

Saddened by his passing. I have thought of him often. Playing for him, his intensity was contagious. I will be forever indebted to him for his confidence in me and his.recommendation to N.U., which earned me a scholarship for football. R.I.P.

I was fortunate to play football for Coach Carstens and Coach Yankee in 1962 and 1963 (class of 1964). To say that they were inspirational is an understatement. In fact, most of us would run through walls for them.

Coach Yankee was always fun and serious almost simultaneously, but.....when he got very serious, that meant something and we all knew when he wanted our full attention. He was always sincere and direct in what he did. I really enjoyed playing football for him.

Coach Yankee implemented Northwestern's offensive play numbering system at DGHS. It was so simple and straightforward.... very easy to follow. He simplified the game for us. I used that same numbering system to coach Pop Warner football in Arizona twenty years later.

His favorite saying was "that guy got his clock cleaned"... meaning someone just hit someone very very hard. He taught us the right and fair way to block. Methods to be effective and not be penalized because the techniques were clean and true to the spirit of the game. Like most good coaches, he hated penalties of any kind especially holding penalties by offensive linemen.

Coach Yankee influenced my life in a very positive way. I believe his influence helped to shape me as a man. I will always be grateful to Coach Yankee.

So sorry to hear of his passing. He was one of my heroes playing for N.U. To my good fortune , he came to Downers Grove to coach..He was the most inspirational coach I ever played for. And I know his recommendation helped me gain a football scholarship to N. U., my dream school. He has always been in my thoughts and will continue to be.

Hello, Kathy. Bill Kusnierz (also DGN '68) just sent me the obituary. It was like a gut punch.

I so much remember the years of you being our neighbor and how much my parents just loved being around you two. I remember crazy times at the DG Pool, too. But mostly, I remember being my football & track coach - and them he became my friend. I learned so much from him - and not just about sports.

You may recall that I was not a great athlete, particularly at football. My folks were concerned, and talked to Dick & Paul about me playing. I never knew it until I was maybe 30 that they said, "Look, Mike may never do much for us, but we can do a lot for him". And they did! Oh, they did! Integrity, dedication, hard work & team work. What you saw is what you got from them. Those lessons have stuck with me, and helped me big time, and I have tried to pay it forward.

I'm glad I saw him a couple times in Elkhorn, and one last time at the golf course (you were off that day). I always meant to make it up there again, and am sorry I didn't. Do you remember the old ND story about God saying, "God bless Steve Oracko"? Well, I have often said, God bless Paul Yanke & Dick Carstens.

Maybe I will run into you some day down in Naples; I usually make a short visit there each year.

All the best, Kathy.

I was surprised and saddened to read of Coach's passing. Surprised because for his players he was always the same; intense, fair, encouraging leader behind our championship run. He will never age (at least in my mind). He will always be the same man who before each game would fire us up by saying; "Team tackle, pursue relentlessly, execute flawlessly." Then he would have us all pray that we would come through the game without injury (try doing that in today's politically correct society).
There were several posts that referred to "Sunny, cool, and 72". For those that didn't have the chance to play for him this needs a little explanation. Before each practice Coach would post the schedule of drills so that we could better prepare ourselves and everyone would be on the same page. At the top of the schedule would be the day's weather. It was always Sunny, cool, and 72. Now mind you it could be hotter than the hinges of hades, snowing a blizzard, or raining like a monsoon. To Coach it was always sunny, cool and 72.
First and 10 Coach, the Thundering Herd will miss you.

It was my honor and pleasure to cover Paul's teams for the Gazette throughout his outstanding run as Elkhorn High football coach. He not only was a good friend, but also an excellent coach and teacher, and I always could count on him for some excellent and personable quotes. Adding to the honor of our friendship, he and I were inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame on the same night in 1996. --- Dave Wedeward, retired Janesville Gazette sports editor

Met Paul and Kathy in Fl this year2017 and enjoyed our daily interactions as Paul kept the street clean in front of his property. He always was gracious and Kathy took great pride in assisting him daily. A great man who left a mark in many men and women during his tenure. My thoughts to Kathy for her steadfast love during his last final game

my heartfelt sympathy goes out to Jeff and his household, his mom and siblings this week as you mourn the loss of Paul Yanke. I did not have the honor of personally knowing him but through the eyes of Jeff, it is abundantly clear what a substantively positive difference he effected upon many lives in what seems like too brief a time on this earth. Thankful to Almighty God for the life of Paul Yanke.

I don't know Paul, but I read obituaries from the area so I can pray for those who die. I have a great devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. It is so discouraging to see so many Catholics who do not get a Funeral Mass said for them. The Mass is the most powerful prayer the church offers. God's blessings on all of you for remembering Paul with a Mass in his time of spiritual need

My condolences to the entire Yanke family. What an impact Coach left on me, I was so happy to have met and known him. He is one, if not the only teacher I ever cared for. He had that infectious smile about him and deeply cared for his students. One of the coaches that felt that losing was "Not acceptable! " You will be truly missed by all!!! Rest in peace coach and may your family find peace and comfort.

So many great memories of Coach flood my mind today. What a privilege to have him as both a teacher and coach. One of the few teachers and man that impacted me enough to remember after all these years. Know that I mourn with you but also rejoice in the freedom and clarity he now enjoys. Go play where it's always "Sunny, cool, and 72" coach! In my prayers as always.
